Activity 6: Energy for the future (written questions)
1. A green building is a produces zero pollution. The building does not produce any carbon emissions, doesn’t harm the environment in any way and does not take up too much space. The building will use alternative methods to power, heat and run the building. An example of a green building is the Bahrain World Trade Centre which uses wind turbines to give power to the building.
2. These are some green features of a building:
• Advanced Framing/Extra Insulation
• High Efficiency Water Heater
• Air Sealing
• Rainwater Collector (can be used to irrigate)
• Solar Panels
Conclusion
At St Albans, we found that there are many un-green characteristics in the buildings in the College. There were far fewer green features in the buildings around campus, than there were un-green features. One of the very good, energy saving green features that we found, was in the Knapp-Fisher common room and it was the movement sensor. When the sensor detected movement, it automatically turned on the lights, and when there was no movement for 5 or so minutes, the lights automatically turned off. One of the un-green features that we found was the air conditioning. There are lots of air conditioners all around the school and they use huge amounts of electricity and give off pollution. Overall we found that there are hundreds of un-green features at St Albans, and only a few green features. St Albans needs to cut down on our carbon emissions.

Activity 4: The Earth Summit
1.The Earth Summit is an event that is attended by many representatives from countries all over the world. They discuss very important issues regarding the Earth such as global warming, climate change, resources and lots of other things.
2.United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.
3.It was held from the 3rd of June to the 19th of June 1992.
4.It was held in Rio de Janeirio.
5.The most recent Earth Summit is going to be held from the 20th-22nd of June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro.
6.The purpose of the Earth Summit is to try and find ways to make the Earth cleaner, more efficient in using its resources and try to find ways to sustain this way of life.
7.At the Earth Summit the representatives made a blueprint called the Agenda 21 and this blueprint was a plan to keep the earth’s resources sustainable and promote rural development.
8.I think it is necessary to have these events for a number of reasons. It makes people more aware of what is going on around us, and that it is not just a story, it is real and cannot be ignored. It also gets people to start doing something, not just get them to sit around waiting for something to happen.
9.No, I don’t think that the 1992 Earth Summit was successful at all because nothing really happened after the summit. There was also not another summit held until this year which proves that it wasn’t very successful and they are trying again to put the Earth Summit into action.
10.Sustainable development is to keep the earth inhabitable and have resources readily available for of future generations. The Earth Summit’s main goal was to try and get the scheme going.

Activity 8
- African nationalism is the political movement for Africa as a unified continent and the desire for African people to rule themselves, not be ruled by others.2. The Aborigines’ Rights Protection Society - 1897; The African National Congress - 1912; The National Congress of West Africa – 1920.3. Pan-Africanism is a movement that aims to unify African people or people living in Africa, into a one community and to establish co-operation between all Africans.4. African Nationalism has to do with African people trying to rule themselves in their own country. Pan-Africanism has to do with trying to unite African people and people living in Africa into one community.5. Kwame Nkruma and Robert Sobukwe contributed to the Pan-African movement in Africa by helping the decolonization process and protesting for their rights and freedom.6. Bob Marley’s song, “Buffalo Soldier” relates extremely well to slavery and white oppression in America. It explains how black Africans, the Buffalo Soldiers, were stolen from Africa and forced to work in America. It then goes on about how the black Africans were then hated, and they had to “fight for survival” because there were white haters out there that wanted to kill the black people, for example, The Ku Klux Klan. It then goes on to speak about the Civil War in America, where the North won the war and freed black people from slavery.
