Activity 1: Development


1. Development is the progression and advancements in technology, economics, globalization, etc.    Development to one person may be considerably different to another person’s development. For example, a poor persons development might mean being about to put a roof over their head, where a rich man’s development may be getting faster internet or a nicer car.

2. The country’s GDP, HDI, the average life span, the number of infant deaths per  100 births and the number of people recieving education.

Higher HDI.
Have generally low GDP’s and HDI’s.
Greater average life span.
Have fewer medical institutes and hospitals.
Better infrastructure.
Have higher unemployment rate.
Higher employment rates.
Have lower average life spans.



   4. “LEDC” means “less-economically developed countries” and “MEDC” means “more-economically developed countries.”

5. 1. Yes there is, they are all African countries.

5.2. The reason they are all African countries is that African countries are generally much less developed that other continents like Europe. Also there are much less hospitals and medical facilities and things like medicine aren't always freely available.

5.3 The countries are all Africa countries, they are all in heavily infested malaria areas and a lot of the children there are born with AIDS.

5.4 Subsistence farming is where the farmer grows crops and food to provide only for himself and his family, there is not a lot of food leftover to sell.

5.5 They rely on having a good rainfall, fertile land, the weather to be good. They also need to make sure that they have enough surplus left over to sell and make money for things like rent, medical treatment etc.

6. Sustainable development is a pattern of growth in which the use of resources aims to meet human needs while maintaining the enviroment so that these needs can not only be used now, but in the future.

7. Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education.  Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women.  Goal 4: Reduce child mortality rates.  Goal 5: Improve maternal health.  Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases.  Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability.  Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development.
